Mustangs Sweep UCSB at Lagoon Open
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- In the 2011 season opener for both the men's and women's cross country teams, Cal Poly swept both dual meets with the men winning 22-35 and the women winning 25-30 over UC Santa Barbara at the Lagoon Open on Saturday.
The men's team was paced by Daniel Gonia in first place and a time of 24:19.8 while teammate David Cardona, finishing fourth overall and second in the dual meet crossed the line in a time of 24:39.4.
Two former Mustangs, running unattached, finished second and third. Philip Reed finished second with a time of 24:27.4 while Jamason Mora was third with a time of 24:36.4.
Jeremy Acosta was the top UCSB runner in fifth overall (third in dual) with a time of 25:40.4. Former Mustang Carl Dargitz finished sixth in 24:46.9.
Michael Johnson was the third Mustang to cross the line in a time of 24:49.1 while Brandon Shirck was the fourth scoring Cal Poly runner with a time of 24:56.1. Chris Frias and Sean Davidson were the fifth and sixth Cal Poly runners with times of 24:56.9 and 25:01.00.
In the women's race Vanessa Hancock finished second overall, but was the top collegiate competitor with a time of 17:22.1. She was followed by Andrea Jacobs of UCSB with a time of 17:29.5. Leanne Fogg was the second Mustang to cross the line in fifth overall, third in the dual and a time of 17:30.4.
Meghan Breadmore was the next scoring Mustang with a time of 17:45.2 followed by Savannah Pio and a time of 17:50.4.
Alex Ciavaglia was the eighth collegiate runner to cross the line with a time of 18:01.7 while Courtney Kostrikin was 12th with a time of 18:13.7.
Both the men's and women's teams will compete on Saturday when they travel to the UC Irvine Invitational.
