FRESNO, Calif. – Freshman Haley Kepler prevailed in Flight B singles action to claim one of only two victories by a Cal Poly women's tennis player on Saturday at the Fresno State-hosted Bulldog Classic.
Kepler downed Jessica Stokes of Cal State Stanislaus, 6-1, 6-1, in the semifinal round of the Flight B singles consolation bracket. Also competing in the Flight B consolation competition was fellow freshman Anna Klavins, who fell against Kelsey Chrisco of Cal State Stanislaus, 6-3, 6-1.
In other singles matches featuring Mustangs, junior Jen Cornea (right) topped Loyola Marymount's Logan Finnell, 6-0, 6-1, in the back draw. In Flight A consolation action, junior Ane McPike dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision versus Davina Meza of Cal State Stanislaus.
In doubles play, the tandem of junior Gabby Gatewood and Kepler fell at the quarterfinal hurdle of the Open Doubles bracket against Nevada's Michelle Okhremchuck and Emma Verbene, 8-1. In the Open Doubles consolation competition, Mustang junior Kathryn Webb and McPike fell against Chrisco and Stokes, while Klavins teamed with Melissa Arthur of Saint Mary's and dropped an 8-2 decision versus Montana's Precious Gbabamosi and Mackenzie Rozell.
Action at the Bulldog Classic concludes on Sunday morning.
