FRESNO, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's tennis doubles tandem of juniors Ane McPike (right) and Kathryn Webb advanced to the finals of the Open Doubles consolation bracket on Sunday morning as the Mustangs completed action at the Fresno State-hosted Bulldog Classic.
McPike and Webb opened their Sunday by edging Montana's Precious Gbabamosi and Mackenzie Rozell, 9-8 (7-3). McPike and Webb, however, fell in the championship match against the other Montana team of Laurence Pelchat and Heather Davidson, 9-7.
In the remaining doubles match involving Cal Poly players, juniors Gabby Gatewood and Jen Cornea teamed to trounce Pacific's Gergana Boncheva and Iveta Masarova in the back draw bracket, 8-5.
In singles action, freshman Haley Kepler faltered against Kelsey Chrisco of Cal State Stanislaus in Flight B consolation play, 5-7, 6-2, 1-0. In the same bracket, fellow Mustang freshman Anna Klavins suffered a 6-0, 6-3 defeat against Pacific's Christiana Ferrari.
The three-day Bulldog Classic marked the end of Cal Poly's three-tournament fall calendar. The Mustangs, who return four starters from last season's squad that finished fourth in the Big West Conference standings, open their 2013 spring slate when hosting UC Santa Cruz at the San Luis Obispo Country Club on Jan. 13.
