FRESNO, Calif. – Junior Gabby Gatewood (right) was the only Cal Poly women's tennis player to prevail in both singles and doubles action on Friday as the Mustangs opened play at the Fresno State-hosted Bulldog Classic.
Gatewood opened Cal Poly's Friday efforts by teaming with freshman Haley Kepler in the Open Doubles bracket to post an 8-6 victory against Davina Meza and McKenzy Harden of Cal State Stanislaus at the round of 16 stage. In the other round of 16 match involving Cal Poly, junior Ane McPike and Kathryn Webb fell against Fresno State's Agrawal/Kirpicheva, 8-3. In round of 32 play, Mustang freshman Anna Klavins teamed with Melissa Arthur of Saint Mary's, but the combined pair were stopped by fellow Gaels Danielle Flores and Hannah Liljekvist, 8-3.
Gatewood returned in the Flight A singles bracket to best Rymma Maslova of Nevada, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. In the round of 16, however, Gatewood dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision against Catherine Leduc of Saint Mary's. Also prevailing in the round of 32 before falling at the next stage was Webb, who topped Liljekvist, 7-6(4), 6-3, before faltering against Melissa McQueen of Fresno State, 6-3, 6-3. Also in the round of 32, McPike fell against Loyola Marymount's Reka Rohonyi, 6-4, 6-3.
In B Flight singles action, Klavins bested Harden, 6-2, 6-4, at the round of 16 before dropping a 6-1, 6-1 decision against Pacific's Regina Suarez in the quarterfinal phase. Also in the round of 16, Kepler fell against Pacific's Christiana Ferrari, 6-1, 6-1.
