Webb Doubles Up at 34th Annual Tracy Austin Tournament
ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, Calif. – Cal Poly women's tennis player Kathryn Webb's preparations for the upcoming season reached a summer apex on July 15 with the Mustang junior capturing both the women's open doubles and mixed open doubles titles at the 34th annual Tracy Austin Tournament inside the Jack Kramer Club.
Webb (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) kickstarted her victorious Sunday by teaming with former juniors partner Tiana Takenaga to defeat Maddy Sung and Ena Shibahara in the women's open championship match, 6-4, 7-6 (2).
Webb next partnered with Tyler Bowman in capturing the mixed doubles title with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph against Trent Aaron and Sophia Bursulaya. Webb cemented her second tournament crown of the day with an ace.
Competing strictly with junior Ane McPike this past spring, Webb helped post a 5-3 doubles record in Big West Conference matches. A career 9-11 player in dual doubles matches, Webb has chalked up a 27-14 mark in singles action during two springs at Cal Poly.
As a team, the 2012 Mustangs (10-11) won their final three conference matches during a six-day span to solidify a top-four finish in the final Big West standings for a fifth-successive season. Cal Poly, however, saw its season come to a close with a 4-3, six-hour loss against UC Santa Barbara during the April 27 quarterfinal round of the Big West Championships.
The Mustangs are expected to return six starters from last spring's squad and, in Sophia Bott (San Clemente, Calif.) and Louise Oxnevad (Queenstown, New Zealand), feature the fourth-ranked freshman unit among TennisRecuiting.net's Top 25 Mid-Major Women's Recruiting Classes.
