Second-Half Goals Lift Cal Poly to 3-0 Exhibition Win Against Westmont
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — A trio of second-half goals carried the Cal Poly women's soccer team to a 3-0 exhibition win over Westmont in its first match of the season in Alex G. Spanos Stadium on Thursday night.
The game-winner came in the 48th minute when junior Elise Krieghoff set up sophomore Megan Abutin from about 12 yards out for a shot into the upper-right corner.
Nearly 17 minutes later, Abutin reciprocated in the attack, returning the favor by sending a through ball ahead to Krieghoff, who fired a 10-yard shot from the left inside the far post.
Krieghoff then recorded her second assist in the 77th minute, crossing from just in front of the right corner flag over to Breanna Rittmann (pictured at right).
On one touch, the sophomore (back from a redshirt season a year ago) aimed to the roof of the net from almost point-blank vicinity to put away the insurance goal.
The Mustangs used 23 players on the evening, including three goalkeepers.
Cal Poly will open its regular season at Pepperdine at 3 p.m. Aug. 22 before hosting its home opener against Lamar at noon Aug. 24.
