Shorts Leads Cal Poly Wrestlers to 21-18 Triumph Over CSU Bakersfield

SANTA MARIA, Calif. — The Cal Poly wrestling team left the decision in the hands of senior Colt Shorts.

The 157-pounder from Canonsburg, Penn., did not disappoint his teammates, leading from start to finish in a 6-0 decision and lifting the Mustangs to a 21-18 Pac-12 Conference dual meet victory over CSU Bakersfield on Saturday night at Righetti High School.

"Shorts is continuing to close the gap on some of the best in the nation," said first-year Cal Poly head coach Jon Sioredas.

Shorts (pictured above), now 18-11 on the year, stepped onto the mat with the team score tied at 18-18 and tallied a takedown in the first period, an escape in the second stanza and a takedown plus riding time in the final period for his shutout against Sean O'Rourke.

Cal Poly won six of the 10 bouts for its first win over the Roadrunners since the 2013-14 season, improving to 5-8 on the year. Earlier in the day, the Mustangs fell to No. 24 North Dakota State 30-6. The Bison defeated CSU Bakersfield 32-8 and are now 12-3 on the year.

"We wrestled very hard today," said Sioredas. "We were in many of the matches against a top-25 North Dakota State team and we won some close ones against CSU Bakersfield.

"We're looking forward to getting back to work next week with some momentum," Sioredas added. "We need to continue to improve these next seven days."

Against CSU Bakersfield, Cal Poly won four straight bouts for a 14-4 advantage. The Roadrunners posted a fall, technical fall and decision to wipe out the deficit and held an 18-14 lead with two bouts to go.

Mustang 149-pounder Joshy Cortez responded with an 18-6 major decision over Everett Pratt, tallying eight takedowns, an escape and riding time, tying the meet score at 18-18 and setting the stage for Shorts' heroics in the final bout at 157.

The four consecutive Mustang victories included major decisions by Thomas Lane at 197 and Spencer Empey at 285, a 5-3 overtime victory by Mitch Woods at 184 and a 3-2 decision by Travis Berridge at 174.

Berridge scored a takedown with 50 seconds left in the third period to snap a 1-1 tie and held on for his 11th win in 17 matches this season, igniting the four-bout winning streak.

Woods earned his fifth straight win and 10th in his last 11 matches with his extra-period win over Bryan Battisto. Woods tallied an escape in the last period to even the match at 3-3 and force overtime, then scored a takedown 36 seconds into the extra period for the win, lifting his mark to 11-5.

Lane kept the run going with a solid 11-0 triumph over Jacob Sieder at 197, recording a takedown and four-point near fall in the opening period for a 6-0 lead and coasting to the win, evening his record at 11-11.

Empey gave Cal Poly its 14-4 cushion with a 14-6 major decision against Alex Encarnarcion-Strand. Trailing 6-4 in the second period, Empey tallied a takedown and four-point near fall to turn the match around. Empey is now 14-13.

Cal Poly's only wins against North Dakota State were earned by Sohrab Movahedi at 184 and Ty Schilling at 141.

Movahedi muscled his way to a 12-8 decision over Tyler McNutt with five takedowns, an escape and riding time while Schilling, wrestling for his older brother Colton and competing in his first dual meet as a Mustang, scored a reversal in the second period and held on for a 2-1 triumph over Taylor Nein.

Wrestling at his prep alma mater, Luke Wilson lost a tough 7-6 decision at 165. Lane and Xavier Johnson both lost by three points and Cortez fell short by four points.

Now 5-8 overall and 1-2 in Pac-12 duals, Cal Poly will host Northern Colorado for its final home dual meet of the season next Sunday at noon in the Mott Athletics Center.
