Cal Poly to ‘Host' North Dakota State, CSU Bakersfield for Dual Meets

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly wrestling team will compete in a pair of "home" matches Saturday against CSU Bakersfield and North Dakota State at Righetti High School in Santa Maria.

Coach Jon Sioredas' Mustangs wrestle No. 24 North Dakota State at 4 p.m. and CSU Bakersfield in a Pac-12 dual meet at 6 p.m. CSU Bakersfield and North Dakota State square off against each other at 2 p.m.

Cal Poly is coming off losses to Wyoming and Air Force last weekend as part of Alumni and Supporter Weekend. Sunday's match against Air Force was held in the Performing Arts Center's Harman Hall for the first time in program history.

The Mustangs will carry a 4-7 mark into Saturday's dual meets. North Dakota State is 10-3 for the season and 2-1 in Big 12 matches after posting a 2-2 mark in the Virginia Duals two weeks ago. CSU Bakersfield sports a 4-3 mark after falling to Utah Valley on Friday and defeating Boise State on Sunday.

Lone Mustang to win both of his matches last week was 184-pounder Mitch Woods with 4-1 and 5-4 decisions. Woods is now 10-5 on the year and has won four straight matches and nine of his last 11. The senior is 4-0 in duals this season.

Cal Poly 157-pounder Colt Shorts, ranked No. 18 in the NCAA Division I Coaches Rankings last week, split his two matches to go to 17-10 for the season. He dropped a 6-4 decision to No. 19 Archie Colgan of Wyoming and blanked Dane Robbins of Air Force in a 10-0 major decision.

Other Mustangs at or above the .500 mark for the year include 141-pounder Colton Schilling (12-8), 165-pounder Luke Wilson (9-9) and 285-pounder Spencer Empey (13-12).

North Dakota State brings a trio of nationally ranked wrestlers to Saturday's three-way dual.

Bison 125-pounder Josh Rodriguez is ranked No. 4 with a 15-1 record. A two-time national qualifier from Guadalupe, Calif., and a Righetti High School graduate, Rodriguez placed third in the Big 12 Championships a year ago.

North Dakota State 157-pounder Clay Ream is ranked No. 8 with a 16-3 mark and also is a two-time NCAA qualifier while 165-pounder Andrew Fogarty is 18-5 as a redshirt freshman.

Sixth-year Bison head coach Roger Kish owns a 50-37 overall record and was an assistant with the Bison for two years before being elevated to the top post. He was a two-time NCAA runner-up at Minnesota.

The Mustangs and Bison have met three times on the mat, North Dakota winning twice, including a 27-9 decision two years ago in Fargo.

CSU Bakersfield's quartet of nationally ranked matmen is led by 141-pounder Russell Rohlfing with a No. 18 ranking and a 19-8 record.

Other nationally ranked Roadrunners include No. 19 Matt Williams (15-7) at 197 pounds, No. 25 Coleman Hammond (15-5) at 149 and No. 26 Lorenzo De La Riva (14-9) at 165.

First-year Roadrunner head coach Manny Rivera was an assistant coach at North Dakota State for five seasons before coming to Bakersfield. An assistant coach at Virginia for one year and a graduate assistant at Minnesota for two seasons, Rivera was a three-time NCAA qualifier at Minnesota, placing seventh at 141 pounds in 2007, the year the Gophers claimed the national title.

Cal Poly trails CSU Bakersfield 29-17-1 in the all-time series between the two schools. Last time the Mustangs defeated the Roadrunners was during the 2013-14 season, a 25-6 Cal Poly victory in Bakersfield.

Next week, Cal Poly will host Northern Colorado in its final home dual meet of the season on Sunday, Feb. 5. The match starts at noon in Mott Athletics Center.
