Trio of Cal Poly Wrestlers Advance to Semifinals in Las Vegas Invitational

LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- Cal Poly will be represented by three wrestlers in the semifinal round of the 2011 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday morning at the Las Vegas Convention Center, each posting three victories Friday.

Two-time NCAA All-American Boris Novachkov earned a 4-1 decision against Shay Warren of Harvard, pinned Mitchell Richey of Indiana in 5 minutes, 52 seconds and decisioned No. 7 Evan Henderson of North Carolina 8-1.

Novachkov, a two-time Pac-12 champion and seeded second in the tournament, is 10-0 on the year and faces No. 3 Michael Mangrum of Oregon State in the semifinals Saturday morning.

Novachkov (pictured at right) posted a 31-2 record a year ago en route to a second-place NCAA finish. Both of his losses were to Kellen Russell of Michigan by 3-2 decisions. Russell is seeded No. 1 in this weekend's tournament, but was upset in the quarterfinals by No. 8 Hunter Stieber of Ohio State 6-5 Friday night.

At 174, Ryan DesRoches decisioned Scotty Bacon of Boise State 8-2, Tyler Koehn of Nebraska 6-1 and No. 6 Ethan Headlee of Pittsburgh 3-2.

DesRoches is a two-time NCAA qualifier and sports a 9-0 mark so far this season. He is seeded third in the tournament and takes on No. 2 Nick Heflin of Ohio State in Saturday's semifinals.

Mustang 285-pounder Atticus Disney is seeded 11th and pinned Steven Wood of CSU Bakersfield in 2 minutes, 54 seconds. He then upset sixth-seeded Brendan Barlow of Kent State with a fall in 1:19 and edged No. 3 Tucker Lane of Nebraska 3-2.

Disney is 4-0 on the year -- he earned a 21-5 technical fall against Wood in a dual meet two weeks ago -- and meets No. 2 Clayton Jack of Oregon State in the semifinals Saturday morning.

Ryan Smith posted a 10-2 major decision against Matt Loew of Hofstra at 197 pounds, but dropped an 11-5 decision in a second-round matchup against Maxwell Huntley of Michigan.

Smith, a 2010 Pac-10 runner-up and 2011 NCAA qualifier, is seeded sixth and defeated Joshua Mohr of Air Force 9-3 in the wrestlebacks before he was eliminated by John Gusewelle of North Dakota State by fall in 1:13. Smith is 6-3 on the year.

The lone Cal Poly wrestler still alive in the wrestlebacks is 133-pounder Brandan Rocha. He lost his first-round match to No. 11 Thomas Kelliher of Wisconsin in a 4-2 decision, but earned three straight decisions in the wrestlebacks to lift his record to 4-2.

Rocha beat Nikkolas Pena of Cornell 6-1, Richard Serna of Western Wyoming 10-8 and Sam Bauer of Northern Colorado 3-2. He faces No. 7 Ridge Kiley of Nebraska in the fourth round of the wrestlebacks Saturday morning and needs to win that match to guarantee a top-eight finish.

Britain Longmire (125 pounds), Adam Aslam (149), Elijah Jackson (157) and Sean Dougherty (184) all were eliminated Friday.

Cal Poly is among 34 teams, including 12 in the top 30, competing in the two-day tournament. The Mustangs are 10th in the team standings after Friday's final bouts with 39 points. Ohio State leads the way with 69 points, followed by Michigan at 63.5 and defending team champion Cornell at 61.

The semifinals on Saturday start at 9 a.m., with the championship finals set to begin at 3 p.m.

Coach Brendan Buckley's Mustangs are ranked as high as No. 19 this week.
