Cal Poly Fourth After First Round of Matador Golf Invitational

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. – Paced by Madison Hirsch and Sophie Bergland, the women's team of Cal Poly's Swanson Golf Program is fourth among 10 teams following the opening round of play in the Matador Golf Invitational hosted by CSUN on Monday.

Hirsch (pictured at right) was tied for third with a six-over-par 78 while Bergland was tied for 13th with an 81 after the first 18 holes of play.

The second round was suspended due to darkness with each player having three or four holes to complete. Play was slowed by high winds.

The second round will be completed Tuesday morning, followed by the final 18 holes of play.

Coach Sofie Aagaard's Mustangs carded a four-person 42-over-par 330 at the Wood Ranch Golf Club. Santa Clara leads with a 319 total, followed by Hawai'I at 324 and Morehead State at 329.

Kristen Le of Santa Clara leads the individual standings with a 76, with CSUN's Chomchana Phuchanbanchob one stroke back. Joining Hirsch in third place are Victoria Morgan of Southern California and Summer Moser of Loyola.

Besides Hirsch and Bergland, Cal Poly's other scoring golfers are Meredith Hirsch with an 85 for 28th place, Desiree Gillaspy with an 86 for 36th place and Jamie Binns with an 87 for 39th place.
