Phillips Leads First-Place Cal Poly in Firestone Grill Invitational

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. -- Alex Phillips carded a par 73 to lead the Cal Poly women's golf team to first place after the opening round of play in the Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational on Monday at Cypress Ridge Golf Course.
Madison Hirsch added a 75 while Taylor Yoshitake and Asia Adell checked in with 81s as Coach Scott Cartwright's Mustangs posted a four-person 310 score, six strokes ahead of a trio of teams tied for second place.
Sonoma State, UC Riverside and Seattle all posted 316 totals on the 5,996-yard course. Weber State, Santa Clara and the Cal Poly "B" team rounded out the top five, sharing fifth place with 318 totals.
Final round is set for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start Tuesday.
Jamie Corr led the Mustang "B" team with a 73 and Montana Kosty added an 80.
Phillips (pictured above) and Corr share the individual lead with Annie Freman of Santa Clara, all with 73s. Juhie Lee of Seattle is fourth with a 74 while five golfers are another stroke behind in fifth place, including Hirsch.
Corr and UC Riverside's Brittani Ferraro both carded one eagle. Lee and Adell led the field with five birdies each while Hirsch and Audra Kepler of Cal State Monterey Bay both posted 14 pars to lead all 68 golfers.
Cal Poly topped the field in both par-4 and par-5 scoring while Weber State posted the best score on the par-3 holes.
