AUSTIN, Texas — Competing in the second of his three events at this week's NCAA Men's Swimming Championships, Cal Poly's Sonny Fierro raced in the 200-yard freestyle prelims at Lee and Joe Jamail Swimming Center on Friday afternoon.
The sophomore was 42nd overall, touching the wall in 1 minute, 37.87 seconds to win his heat.
Fierro is also entered in the 1,650 free, which will take place at 2:45 p.m. Saturday. Three weeks ago, he placed second at the Pac-12 Conference Championships in the mile, finishing with a school-record time of 15:00.97 (No. 22 in the country).
Top-eight finishers are All-Americans, while those placing ninth through 16th earn All-America honorable mention certificates.
