Hyland Matches Big West Record with 15th Pitcher of the Week Honor

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Following a five-game stretch where she equalized the Big West career record for strikeouts, posted a 4-0 record, a 0.95 ERA and struck out 40 hitters in 29.1 innings, Cal Poly softball senior righthander Sierra Hyland was named Big West Pitcher of the Week on Monday for a 15th time during her career.

Having already earned more weekly Big West honors than any athlete in conference history, Monday's honor was the 17th of Hyland's career (Hyland has twice been named Big West Player of the Week). Her 15 career Big West Pitcher of the Week honors equalize Long Beach State's Erin Jones-Wesley (2011-15) for the most pitching awards in conference history.

Hyland, who has been named Big West Pitcher of the Week for three straight weeks, struck out 16 Northern Colorado hitters – the highest single game total of her career – during a 2-1, eight-inning win on March 15.

Two days later at the Loyola Marymount Tournament, Hyland struck out nine Oklahoma batters in a complete-game, one-hitter as the Mustang topped the ninth-ranked Sooners, 3-1.

Hyland struck out five more Oklahoma hitters on March 18 as Cal Poly bested the Sooners once more, 3-1.

Hyland closed LMU Tournament play on March 19 by striking out four Sacramento State hitters and six Dartmouth batters in a pair of relief efforts. With the 10 strikeouts, Hyland furthered her career total to 846 and equalized UC Santa Barbara's Jennifer Davis (2004-07) for the all-time Big West record.

Among NCAA Division I pitchers this season, Hyland ranks fifth in strikeouts (156), seventh in walks allowed per seven innings (0.65), 10th in hits allowed per seven innings (3.23), 26th in ERA (1.00) and 28th in strikeouts per seven innings (9.2).

Winners of eight straight games and 17 of its last 18, Cal Poly (23-7) closes non-conference play with a 1 p.m. home doubleheader versus CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, March 25.
