Late UC Davis Goals Send Cal Poly Men's Soccer to 2-1 Defeat
DAVIS, Calif. – Cal Poly men's soccer senior Kyle Montgomery notched his team-leading third goal of 2011 during the 66th minute on Saturday afternoon, but the Mustangs conceded twice against Big West Conference-leading UC Davis during the final seven-and-a-half minutes to drop a 2-1 decision at Aggie Soccer Field.
The Mustangs (6-7-2, 3-4-0) had tested UC Davis sophomore goalkeeper Omar Zeenni just once during the opening 65 minutes until freshman forward Keegan Smith picked out Montgomery with a quick flick. Montgomery fired his ensuing strike high against Zeenni to break the scoreless deadlock.
UC Davis (7-6-2, 5-2-0), which compiled eight of its 12 shot attempts during the second half, responded in the 83rd minute as freshman forward Matt Wiesenfarth knotted the scoreline with a shot from the right flank and across the goal mouth.
The Aggies required just three additional minutes to register the decisive goal. An 86th-minute UC Davis corner kick – the only corner of the day – drew a Mustang foul inside the penalty area. Aggie sophomore midfielder Alex Aguiar stepped to the spot to convert the penalty, a shot Mustang senior goalkeeper Patrick McLain put a portion of his glove on.
The Mustangs enjoyed one final chance to send the match into overtime, but sophomore forward George Malki's 89th-minute attempt was turned away by Zeenni.
Cal Poly completes its three-match road trip at Cal State Northridge on Saturday, Oct. 29.
