Cal Poly Claims Third Place in Cal Poly Shootout

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. – Cal Poly carded the best total of the final round Tuesday and climbed one spot to a third-place finish in the Cal Poly Shootout men's golf tournament at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course.

Mustang golfers Jimmy Castles and Cole Nygren made the biggest charges at the top of the leaderboard. Castles carded a final-round five-under-par 67 and finished tied for fourth while Cole Nygren birdied four of his first six holes and was at six under par before falling back, finishing with a 69.

UC Santa Barbara ran away with the team title under the play-six, score-five format, amassing a 22-under-par 1,058 total for 54 holes, 24 strokes ahead of runner-up UC Irvine. Cal Poly was another shot back in third.

David Kim of UC Irvine birdied his final hole for a one-shot victory over second-round leader Luis Medina of New Mexico State. Medina entered the final round at 11 under par with a three-shot lead, but had one rough stretch of a bogey, triple bogey and bogey on holes 6-7-8 and fell two shots behind Kim.

Medina climbed back into a tie with Medina at nine under par with two birdies. Kim double-bogeyed the 14th and Medina bogeyed the 16th and 17th holes as both fell to seven under par.

Kim birdied the 18th to claim the first-place trophy.

Bryan Shin of UC Irvine finished third at six under par.

Castles (pixtured above) carded one eagle, four birdies and a bogey en route to his 67 and a tie for fourth place with UC Santa Barbara's Zach Smith.

Nygren recorded six birdies and three bogeys for his 69 and a sixth-place tie with Andrew Israelson of North Dakota State and Brandon Bauman of UC Santa Barbara.

Other scores for Cal Poly golfers include a final-round 72 and 214 total for 13th place by Justin De Los Santos, a 73 for a 224 total by Jordan Wright for 30th place and a 78 for a 224 total and 47th place for Jesse Yap. Grady Smith withdrew from the final round.

Competing as individuals, Nick Engelhardt finished tied for 20th place, Court Lewis finished tied for 30th place and Thomas Lehman placed 52nd. Engelhardt had a 68 for a 219 total, Lewis a 79 for a 224 total and Lehman an 81 for 234 aggregate.

Nygren finished sixth in par-3 scoring at even par and was one under par on the par-4 holes, No. 5 in the field. Castles and Shin shared the top spot in par-5 scoring at nine under par.

Castles was one of three golfers carding a pair of eagles in the tournament. Nygren's 13 birdies was No. 6 and Castles, De Los Santos and Nygren all posted 33 pars for 17th place among the 62 golfers in the tournament.

Start of the final round was delayed 90 minutes by overnight rain and play was halted briefly at about 11 a.m. due to a heavy shower.

Cal Poly will compete in the Big West Conference Championship on May 1-2-3 at the Sandpiper Golf Club in Santa Barbara.
