Nygren Shoots Final-Round 67 to Lift Cal Poly to 11th-Place Finish

TEMPE, Arizona — A round of 67 by senior Cole Nygren (pictured at right) helped the Cal Poly men's golf team climb one spot to an 11th-place finish in the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational on Sunday at the Karsten Golf Course on the Sun Devils' campus.

Nygren's round, the second-best of his Mustang career, included six birdies and a pair of bogeys on the 7,002-yard, par-71 course. He started from the 10th tee, made the turn at one over par and carded five birdies on his back nine to finish with the four-under-par round.

The 67 elevated Nygren from 46th place into a tie for 20th place, his 14th career top-20 finish, with a one-under-par 212 total.

Mustang teammate Jesse Yap was Cal Poly's top finisher Sunday, posting a final-round 70 for a two-under-par 211 aggregate and a tie for 16th place.

Cal Poly posted a four-person two-under-par 282 total, just four strokes off the best team score of the day, and finished with a five-over-par 857 total for 54 holes.

Arizona State claimed top honors by 20 strokes with a 41-under-par 811 total. UNLV finished second at 831 followed by Arizona State's "B" team at 834. There were 16 teams in the field.

Individual medalist honors went to Collin Morikawa of California with rounds of 65, 66 and 69 for a 13-under-par 200 total, one shot ahead of Shintaro Ban of UNLV and second-round leader Chun An Yu of Arizona State.

Cal Poly's other scorers were Grady Smith with a final-round 73 for a 216 total and 44th place, Justin De Los Santos with a 72 for a 220 total and 57th place, and Jimmy Castles with a 74 for a 225 total and 68th place.

Smith finished the par-3 holes at even par, fourth-best in the field, while Yap and Nygren were tied for 14th place in par-4 scoring at one under par. No Mustang finished in the top 20 in par-5 scoring.

Yap carded one eagle while Smith had 39 pars (No. 4) and Nygren 38 pars (No. 5) in the two-day tournament.

Cal Poly returns to action March 29-30 at the Stanford Invitational, to be contested on the Stanford Golf Course on campus.
