SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly will host the second Lamkin Grip Match Play Championship for men on Thursday and Friday at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande.
Each team will field five golfers with the No. 1 golfers from each team playing each other, No. 2 vs. No. 2, etc. Cal Poly will field two teams for the two-day event.
First-round pairings for men are Cal Poly Gold vs. Towson, South Dakota State vs. Seattle, Fresno State vs. Utah State and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps vs. Cal Poly Green.
First round will be held Thursday morning starting at 7:30 a.m., with the semifinals set for Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock. The finals will tee off Friday at 7:30 a.m. All groups will start at the 10th hole.
The Cal Poly men's team, coached by Scott Cartwright, placed 18th out of 24 teams in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Feb. 26 at the Classic Club in Palm Desert. Best finish for the Mustangs this season is a tie for third place in the Pat Hicks Invitational hosted by Southern Utah on Feb. 13-14.
Junior Scott Patterson (pictured at right) leads the Mustangs with his 73.4 scoring average and has three top-20 finishes this year, including a tie for second place in the Pat Hicks Invitational. Sophomore Justin Haley is next with a 74.4 stroke average and a pair of top-20 finishes.
Rounding out the lineup for the Mustangs' Gold team are junior Grant Martens (74.6), senior Bryce Greeley (75.8) and senior Trevor Guthrie (77.3).
Cal Poly will be represented on its Green team by sophomore Buddy Senatore (82.0), freshman Matt Yount (77.3), sophomore Alex Romo (79.0), freshman Johnny Castles (76.0) and junior Derick Strain (76.0).
