CAL POLY WINS 2014 BIG WEST CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Making the first NCAA Division I Tournament appearance in program history, the Cal Poly men's basketball team will find out its opening-round opponent and game site on Sunday, March 16 when players and coaches gather at Firestone Grill to watch the selection show, televised on CBS beginning at 3 p.m.
The viewing is open to all fans and supporters. Firestone Grill is located at 1001 Higuera Street in downtown San Luis Obispo.
Cal Poly (13-19) earned an automatic bid for the NCAA Tournament by topping Cal State Northridge in the Big West Conference Tournament championship on Saturday evening, 61-59. Seeded seventh, Cal Poly became the lowest seed in the 39-year history of the Big West Tournament to win the competition.
To capture the program's first Big West Conference title, Cal Poly first eliminated central coast rival and second-seeded UC Santa Barbara (69-38) in Thursday's quarterfinal round before ousting top-seeded UC Irvine (61-58) in Friday's semifinal phase.
Cal Poly's last NCAA Tournament appearance came in 1986, when the Mustangs qualified for the Division II West Regional. The Mustangs have only made one other postseason appearance in 20 Division I seasons. That appearance came last year as part of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
