Third-year head coach Joe Callero and the Cal Poly Athletics Department recently announced that guard Dylan Royer, the Big West Conference’s top three-point shooter last year, has earned a full scholarship for his 2012-13 senior season.

Forward Zach Gordon Signs National Letter of Intent with Cal Poly
Third-year head coach Joe Callero strengthened an already deep incoming backcourt following Monday’s announcement that 6-8 forward Zach Gordon (Lynwood, Wash. / Archbishop Murphy HS) has inked a National Letter of Intent with the anticipation of joining the Mustang men’s basketball program for the 2012-13 season.

Senior forward David Hanson recorded a team-high 19 points during the final game of his prolific Mustang career, but the Cal Poly men’s basketball program’s run at the 2012 Big West Conference Tournament came to a close on Friday evening as the Mustangs fell at the semifinal hurdle against No. 3 UC Santa Barbara, 60-52, inside the Honda Center.

Senior point guard Amaurys Fermin scored a game-high 16 points and senior forward David Hanson added 12 as the fourth-seeded Cal Poly men’s basketball team advanced to the semifinal round of the Big West Conference for the first time in five seasons with a 66-52 victory against No. 5 UC Riverside on Thursday evening inside the Honda Center.

The fourth-seeded Cal Poly men’s basketball program opens play at the 37th Big West Conference Tournament on Thursday, March 8 inside the Honda Center (Anaheim, Calif.) at 8:30 p.m. with a quarterfinal-round matchup against a familiar foe: No. 5 UC Riverside (14-16, 7-9), a program that eliminated the Mustangs (17-11, 8-8) at the same stage of last year’s competition.

Mustang Men’s Basketball Overpowers Pacific for Big West Fourth Seed
Sophomore forward Chris Eversley scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and senior forward Will Taylor notched 10 points during his final outing in Mott Gym as the Cal Poly men’s basketball program held Pacific to the second-lowest opponent point total in 18 Division I seasons by thumping the Tigers on Saturday evening, 67-38, in the regular season finale for both squads.

The Cal Poly men’s basketball program completes regular season action and looks to lock down the No. 4 seed for the March 8-10 Big West Conference Tournament when hosting Pacific on Saturday, March 3 inside Mott Gym. Televised locally on KSBY (San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties), the matchup tips at 7:05 p.m. A win – regardless of any other result in Big West play on Saturday – cements Cal Poly (16-14, 7-8) the No. 4 seed and an 8:30 p.m. quarterfinal matchup when the Big West Tournament opens on Thursday, March 8 inside the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. Senior forward David Hanson scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to register his fourth double-double of the season as the Cal Poly men’s basketball program moved a step closer to securing the No. 4 seed for the March 8-10 Big West Conference Tournament with a 69-56 triumph against UC Davis on Thursday evening inside Mott Gym.

Big West Tournament Seeding on Line Tonight for Mustang Men’s Basketball Team
The Cal Poly men’s basketball program looks to snap a season-long three-game slide and lock down a seed for the 2012 Big West Conference Tournament when completing regular season action against UC Davis (Thursday, March 1) and Pacific (March 3). Both matchups tip at 7 p.m. inside Mott Gym with Saturday’s showdown against Pacific set to be televised locally on KSBY. The Mustangs (15-14, 6-8) enter the final stretch of the season deadlocked in a fourth-place knot in the Big West standings with Pacific (11-16, 6-8) and UC Irvine (11-17, 6-8), but can cement the No. 4 seed for the March 8-10 conference tournament by winning twice this week.

The Cal Poly men’s basketball program hits the Big West Conference homestretch beginning with a Saturday, Feb. 25 showdown at central coast rival UC Santa Barbara. Televised nationally on ESPNU and globally on ESPN3.com, tip time for Saturday’s matchup inside the Thunderdome is set for 8:05 p.m. Cal Poly (15-13, 6-7), looking to break a two-game overall slide, enters play this week locked in a fourth-place knot in the Big West Conference standings with Pacific (11-15, 6-7). Both the Mustangs and Tigers trail second-place UC Santa Barbara (15-8, 9-3) and Cal State Fullerton (18-7, 9-3) by three-and-a-half games in the conference standings. The Gauchos visit conference-leading Long Beach State on Wednesday, Feb. 22 before hosting Cal Poly.

Mustangs Fall at Northern Colorado in ESPN BracketBuster, 81-73
Sophomore forward Chris Eversley registered a team-leading 18 points and junior guard Dylan Royer hit four three-pointers to finish with 16, but Northern Colorado utilized a dominating run midway through the second half to overtake the Cal Poly men’s basketball program and hand the Mustangs an 81-73 defeat on Saturday evening as part of the 2012 ESPN Sears BracketBuster series inside Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion.

Mustangs Visit Northern Colorado for ESPN BracketBuster Saturday Night
The Cal Poly men’s basketball program faces the NCAA Division I three-point percentage leader for the second straight season in the ESPN Sears BracketBuster series when visiting Northern Colorado on Saturday, Feb. 18. Tip time inside Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion in Greeley, Colo., is set for 6:05 p.m. PT. Northern Colorado (8-17, 5-9), seventh in the Big Sky Conference standings following a 79-76 Wednesday loss at Eastern Washington, enters Saturday’s matchup shooting 45.2 percent from beyond the arc. Cal Poly (15-12, 6-7), which dropped the chance to claim sole possession of fourth place in the Big West standings following a 94-81 setback at Cal State Northridge (Feb. 15), ranks second among conference programs by limiting opponents to a 33.5 percent three-point mark. Northern Colorado also ranks 25th among Division I programs with a 47.7 percent field goal mark.

Senior forward David Hanson led three Mustangs in double-digit scoring figures with 16 points, but the Cal Poly men’s basketball program allowed its highest point total in three seasons on Wednesday night in dropping a 94-81 decision against Cal State Northridge inside the Matadome.

Mustangs Visit Cal State Northridge and Northern Colorado for BracketBuster
The Cal Poly men’s basketball program looks to lengthen a two-game winning streak when visiting Cal State Northridge on Wednesday, Feb. 15 (7 p.m.). The Mustangs (15-11, 6-6) then enjoy a brief respite from Big West Conference action when squaring off at Northern Colorado on Saturday, Feb. 18 (6:05 p.m. PT) as part of the 2012 ESPN Sears BracketBuster series. The Mustangs, who vaulted from seventh place to fourth in the Big West standings after distributing home defeats to UC Riverside (54-52) and UC Irvine (77-74) last week, previously defeated Cal State Northridge (6-17, 2-10) in a record-smashing, 100-54 decimation on Jan. 19. The Mustangs, 3-2 all-time in BracketBuster play, will face Northern Colorado (8-16, 5-8) for the first time in 21 seasons. Cal Poly enters play this week ranked second among Big West programs in opponent three-point percentage (33.5). Northern Colorado, however, leads the nation with a 44.5 percent mark from beyond the arc.

Mustangs Back on the Central Coast to Host UC Riverside and UC Irvine
The Cal Poly men’s basketball program looks to stem what matches its lengthiest slide of the season when returning home to host UC Riverside on Thursday, Feb. 9 and UC Irvine on Saturday, Feb. 11. Tip time for both matchups inside Mott Gym is set for 7 p.m. The Mustangs (13-11, 4-6), who enter play this week seventh in the Big West Conference standings, previously dealt UC Irvine a 66-50 defeat (Jan. 12) before dropping a 60-53 decision at UC Riverside (Jan. 14). Both UC Riverside (11-12, 5-5) and UC Irvine (9-14, 5-5) enter play this week just a game ahead of Cal Poly in the Big West standings. The Highlanders, who ended a four-game losing streak with a 59-54 victory versus UC Davis (Feb. 4), allow the second-fewest points per game among conference programs (63.1), but rank last in scoring offense (60.3). UC Irvine visits second-place Cal State Fullerton (15-7, 7-3) before visiting San Luis Obispo.

Sophomore forward Chris Eversley scored a game-high 18 points, but the Cal Poly men’s basketball program’s efforts to close a late gap during the dying seconds fell short as the Mustangs dropped a 69-66 decision versus CSU Bakersfield inside the Icardo Center on Saturday evening.

Mustangs Cap Four-Game Road Trip Saturday Night at CSU Bakersfield
The Cal Poly men’s basketball program takes a respite from Big West Conference action to complete a four-game road trip when visiting the Icardo Center on Saturday, Feb. 4 to face CSU Bakersfield at 7 p.m. Just 5-6 on the road this season, Cal Poly (13-10) looks to reverse a 60-58 home defeat suffered against the Roadrunners (11-12) on Nov. 16. The Mustangs are seeking their second-successive triumph in Bakersfield after senior forward David Hanson’s career-high 29-point effort helped deliver a 77-61 victory inside Rabobank Arena a season ago. Division I independent CSU Bakersfield, 6-1 against Big West opponents this season, saw its current slide extended to three defeats following a 78-57 loss at New Mexico State on Feb. 1.

The Cal Poly men’s basketball program finalizes its second four-game road trip of the year with matchups at Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, Feb. 2 and Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday, Feb. 4. Both matchups begin at 7 p.m. for Cal Poly (13-9, 4-5), which, having already defeated Cal State Fullerton (13-7, 5-3) at home on Jan. 7, resides just two-and-a-half games behind second-place UC Santa Barbara (11-7, 6-2) in the Big West Conference standings. Division I independent Cal State Bakersfield (11-11), which claimed a 60-58 victory against Cal Poly on Nov. 16, visits New Mexico State on Wednesday, Feb. 1 before welcoming the Mustangs. Cal State Bakersfield owns a 6-1 mark against Big West opponents this season.

In the midst of the program’s second four-game road trip of the 2011-12 season, the Cal Poly men’s basketball team visits UC Davis for a 7 p.m. matchup on Saturday, Jan. 28 inside The Pavilion. The Mustangs (12-9, 3-5) enter the matchup having prevailed just once in four Big West Conference road games this season following Thursday’s 61-51 setback at Pacific. Despite entering Saturday’s game seventh in the Big West standings, the Mustangs reside just two-and-a-half games behind second-place Cal State Fullerton (13-6, 5-2). UC Davis (1-18, 0-7), currently leaking a Big West-leading 75.6 points per game, also ranks second from bottom among conference programs with just 61.6 points scored per night.

The Cal Poly men’s basketball program matches its lengthiest road trip of the 2011-12 campaign with a four-game stretch that opens on Thursday, Jan. 26 against Pacific inside the Spanos Center and continues on Saturday, Jan. 28 versus UC Davis at The Pavilion. Both matchups tip at 7 p.m. for the Mustangs (12-8, 3-4), who have prevailed just once during three Big West Conference road matchups this year. Pacific (6-12, 2-4) enters Thursday’s matchup having been held to 39 points during both matchups against Cal Poly last season while UC Davis (1-17, 0-6), also swept by the Mustangs a year ago, currently allows a Big West-high 75.1 points per contest while ranking second from bottom in points scored per game (61.8).

Prior to embarking on a four-game road trip, the Cal Poly men's basketball program completes a two-game home stand and looks to curtail a two-game slide when hosting Cal State Northridge inside Mott Gym on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 5:05 p.m. Cal Poly's second televised matchup of the month, Saturday's showdown will be carried live on Fox Sports PRIME Ticket in southern California. Despite featuring four Mustangs in double-digit scoring figures, Cal Poly (11-8, 2-4) fell to 5-4 in Mott Gym this season with a 78-69 loss against Big West Conference-leading Long Beach State (Jan. 19). Cal State Northridge – last among Big West programs in field goal (36.9) and three-point (29.0) percentage – enters Saturday's matchup having dropped three of its last four games, including a 69-61 decision at UC Santa Barbara (Jan. 19).

Prior to embarking on a four-game road trip, the Cal Poly men’s basketball program (11-7, 2-3) hosts Big West Conference-leading Long Beach State (12-6, 5-0) on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. before welcoming Cal State Northridge (5-10, 2-3) into Mott Gym on Saturday, Jan. 21 for a 5:05 p.m. matchup that will be televised live on FOX PRIME Ticket. Winners of eight of the previous nine contests – including a 55-50 decision against Cal Poly (Jan. 5) – Long Beach State leads all Big West programs in rebounds per game (38.9) and ranks second in field goal percentage (46.6). Winners of just two of the previous six games, Cal State Northridge ranks last among Big West programs in field goal (37.2) and three-point (29.9) percentage.

The Cal Poly men's basketball program completes a two-game road swing when facing UC Riverside inside the Student Reaction Center on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. The Mustangs (11-6, 2-2), facing five road matchups during their upcoming seven games, earned their first Big West Conference road victory of the year with a 66-50 dismantling of UC Irvine (see below) on Jan. 12. The victory, also Cal Poly's 100th as a Big West member, marked the 15th time in 17 games this year that the Mustangs had outrebounded their opponent (43-34). Cal Poly's Saturday opponent, UC Riverside (9-8, 3-1) slid into second place in the Big West standings on Thursday evening after dealing UC Santa Barbara (7-6, 2-1) a 79-70 overtime defeat.

Both matchups tip at 7 p.m. for the Mustangs (10-6, 1-2), who registered a 5-3 road conference record a year ago. Winners of four of the previous five games, UC Irvine (6-10, 3-1) – in terms of player experience – ranks as one of the youngest sides in Division I, with seven freshman and no seniors. UC Riverside (8-8, 2-1), ranked second among Big West programs in opponent points per game (62.5) and opponent field goal percentage (40.3), hosts UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 12 before welcoming Cal Poly on Saturday evening.

Senior forward Will Taylor finished with a team-leading 16 points and eight rebounds on Thursday evening, but the Cal Poly men’s basketball program missed a pair of potential game-tying three-pointers inside the final seven seconds and fell against Long Beach State at the Walter Pyramid, 55-50.

Facing three games during a six-day span, the Cal Poly men’s basketball program seeks its first Big West Conference victory when visiting Long Beach State on Thursday, Jan. 5 inside the Walter Pyramid and hosting Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Jan. 7 inside Mott Gym. Both matchups tip at 7 p.m. Despite opening Big West play with a 58-57 home loss against rival UC Santa Barbara (Jan. 2), the Mustangs (9-5, 0-1) have still prevailed during seven of their previous 10 games. Cal Poly, 4-0 this season following a loss, requires two more conference victories to register the 100th Big West triumph in program history. Selected to capture the Big West title following the results of a preseason media poll, Long Beach State (8-6, 1-0) opened its conference account by dealing UC Irvine a 74-60 defeat (Jan. 2). Cal Fullerton (10-3, 2-0), the Big West leader in points per game (80.1), rebounds per game (39.8), scoring margin (plus-12.4), field goal percentage (49.5) and three-point percentage (39.0), visits UC Santa Barbara on Thursday before facing Cal Poly.
