SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Former Cal Poly outfielder Nick Torres stretched his hitting streak to 15 games with a seventh-inning leadoff single Sunday night for San Antonio against Northwest Arkansas.
Torres (pictured above) is hitting .358 during the streak with 19 hits in 53 at-bats, including four doubles, lifting his average 29 points to .261.
Infielder Mike Miller expanded his hitting streak to 13 games before it was snapped by Rochester on Saturday. Miller was 17-for-53 (.321) during the run, improving his average to .277.
Spencer Howard, a second-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Phillies last month, made his professional debut Saturday night for the Williamsport Crosscutters in the New York-Penn League. Howard allowed one run and two hits over two innings against Mahoning Valley.
Outfielder Logan Schafer was 5-for-10 in his first three games of July for Norfolk, bumping his average up to .267, before suffering an injury July 5. He has been placed on the seven-day disabled list.
Bud Norris, one of three former Mustangs currently on a Major League roster, was activated from the disabled list by the Los Angeles Angels on July 1 and earned his 12th save July 5 at Minnesota.
Outfielder Mitch Haniger is hitting .276 for the Seattle Mariners, hitting his seventh home run of the season Thursday night against Oakland, while relief pitcher Casey Fien of the Phillies is on the disabled list.
Brian Mundell, promoted to Hartford of the Double-A Eastern League three weeks ago, sports a .291 average and hit his first Double-A home run, a solo shot against Portland on July 2.
Former Mustangs in Triple-A are pitchers Jeff Johnson at Columbus and Chase Johnson at Sacramento along with Miller at Pawtucket and outfielder Logan Schafer at Norfolk. Playing Double-A are infielder Mark Mathias at Akron, Torres and shortstop Peter Van Gansen at San Antonio, Zack Zehner with Trenton and Mundell at Hartford.
