Barbier Lands on 2016 Big West Preseason All-Conference Second Team

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Junior catcher/first baseman Brett Barbier has been selected by College Sports Madness to its 2016 Big West Preseason All-Conference second team.

Barbier is the lone Mustang honored by College Sports Madness. Cal Poly has just two returning position players and eight pitchers off a team that finished 27-27 overall a year ago, placing fourth in the Big West at 14-10.

Last season, Barbier hit .253 with nine doubles, four triples and three home runs. He was second on the team with 34 RBI and started 48 games, 36 behind the plate, nine in left field and three as designated hitter.

Barbier, a graduate of San Ramon Valley High School, knocked in 28 runs in the final 22 games of the 2015 season and earned the team's Dick Morrow Coaches Award.

College Sports Madness selected UC Irvine outfielder Keston Hiura as Big West Preseason Field Player of the Year and Chris Mathewson of Long Beach State as Pitcher of the Year. Daniel Alvarez of UC Irvine was tabbed Freshman of the Year and Rick Vanderhook of Cal State Fullerton was named Coach of the Year.
