Cal Poly Rallies From 4-0 Deficit, But Falls to UC Davis 5-4 in Series Finale
DAVIS, Calif. – First baseman Eric Johnson singled up the middle with two out in the eighth inning, snapping a 4-4 tie and lifting UC Davis to a 5-4 victory over Cal Poly in the finale of a three-game Big West Conference baseball series Sunday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
The win gave the Aggies the series, two games to one, and snapped a string of seven consecutive series wins by the Mustangs over the Aggies (2005-2011). UC Davis is 18-25 on the year and 6-9 in Big West games while Cal Poly fell to 27-19 and 10-8.
UC Davis redshirt freshman right-hander Craig Lanza earned his first collegiate win, pitching 4 2/3 innings in relief of starter Spencer Koopmans. Lanza did not allow a run nor a walk, striking out six while scattering three hits.
UC Davis jumped to a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in both the first and second innings. Designated hitter Nick Lynch belted a two-run home run, his third of the season, in the first frame and center fielder Brett Morgan tripled to score a run and shortstop Evan Heptig grounded out for an RBI in the second.
Cal Poly answered with a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth.
Junior center fielder Mitch Haniger homered leading off the fourth inning, his 11th round-tripper and 51st RBI, both tops in the Big West.
In the Mustang fifth, sophomore first baseman Tim Wise smashed a two-run home run to left field, his second homer of the season, to cut the deficit to 4-3. Haniger followed with a walk, took second on a single by sophomore third baseman Jimmy Allen, advanced to third on a wild pickoff throw by Lanza and came home on sophomore left fielder David Armendariz's groundout to shortstop.
Cal Poly had a runner at second base in the sixth inning, Wise singled to lead off the seventh and Allen was at second base with one out in the eighth, but the Mustangs couldn't score.
Cal Poly went down in order in the ninth, two on strikeouts, after UC Davis took the lead in the bottom of the eighth.
The loss went to Mustang sophomore right-hander Michael Holback (0-2), who gave up a leadoff double to Kevin Barker in the eighth. Barker advanced to third on a grounder to shortstop and came home on Morgan's single to center field.
UC Davis outhit Cal Poly 11-9, led by second baseman Tino Lipson and left fielder David Popkins with two singles each.
Wise (pictured above) had three of Cal Poly's hits – a single, double and home run – while freshman designated hitter Alex Michaels added a single and double.
With 5-4 losses Friday and Sunday, the Mustangs are now 5-10 in one-run games this season.
Cal Poly returns home to host CSU Bakersfield (19-23) for a three-game non-conference series Friday through Sunday in Baggett Stadium. The Roadrunners were swept by North Carolina State in a three-game series.
