Freshman Right Fielder Nick Torres Named Big West Player of the Week

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- True freshman right fielder Nick Torres, who hit .500 in four games last week with his first two collegiate home runs, has been named Big West Conference player of the week.

Torres had multiple hits in three of Cal Poly's four games last week, going 8-for-16 with eight RBI and five extra-base hits –- two doubles, one triple and two round-trippers.

He hit a solo home run against Santa Clara on Tuesday and a two-run shot in the series finale against Washington on Sunday.

In the series opener against Washington on Friday, Torres knocked in five of Cal Poly's six runs with a single, double, triple and groundout as the Mustangs won 6-3.

Cal Poly won the series, two games to one.

Torres currently is hitting a team-leading .381 and also leads the Mustangs with 24 hits, eight doubles, 40 total bases, a .635 slugging percentage and .435 on-base percentage. The Lakewood High School graduate also is second on the team with 15 RBI.

Named Big West Conference pitcher of the week was UC Riverside senior right-hander Eddie Orozco, who ran his record to 3-1 on the season with a complete-game, three-hit, 15-strikeout performance in a 1-0 win over Sacramento State on Saturday.

Cal Poly senior southpaw Kyle Anderson notched 11 strikeouts in a 2-0 win over Washington, scattering six hits. It was the first complete game shutout by a Mustang pitcher in five years.

Cal Poly (11-5) visits Minnesota (7-8) for a three-game non-conference series Saturday through Monday in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis.
