Now in her 20th year as an athletic trainer at Cal Poly, Kristal Slover begins her ninth year as the department’s head athletics trainer. On July 1, 2002, Slover replaced Steve Yoneda, who retired after 32 years at Cal Poly.

During her tenure at Cal Poly, Slover has helped lead the successful Cal Poly Sports Medicine program by directing all student-athletics trainers and serving as a guest lecturer for several classes and labs at Cal Poly and Cuesta College.

She also serves as the Registration Chair for the Far West Athletic Trainers Association’s Annual Symposium.

A graduate of Cal State Fullerton, Slover and husband, John, are the proud parents of two daughters, Janna Marie Slover (10) and Kacie (7).

James Eggen is in his 10th season as an assistant athletics trainer at Cal Poly this fall.

Eggen was head athletics trainer at Hancock College for one year (2002-03), a graduate assistant athletic trainer at the University of Virginia for one year (2001-02), a student athletic trainer at San Diego State for three years (1998-2001) and a student athletic trainer at Cuesta College for one year (1996-97).

Eggen, a December 2000 graduate of San Diego State with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, earned his master’s degree in athletic training at Virginia in August 2002.

Eggen is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, Far West Athletic Trainers’ Association and National Strength and Conditioning Association. He has taught classes in the field of sports injuries at Hancock College and the University of Virginia and is a volunteer for the NATA’s Board of Certification.

Eggen is certified as a Certified Athletic Trainer and with the American Red Cross in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, Automatic External Difibrillator and Standard First Aid. And is certified with the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

Eggen and his wife, Theresa, married 13 years, live in San Luis Obispo and have two daughters, Keeley, 8, and Sarah, 6.

PAUL GABRIELSON MA, ATC

Paul Gabrielson is in his 11th season with the Cal Poly Mustangs as athletic trainer. He worked six seasons in the Philadelphia Phillies organization.

With the Phillies, Gabrielson worked with minor league teams in Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, New Jersey, and New York and has spent time in the Appalachian League, South Atlantic League and New York Penn League as well as working spring training and fall instructional league in Clearwater, FL.

Gabrielson grew up in Pleasanton, Calif., and graduated from Amador Valley High School. He attended Las Positas, Chabot and Ohlone colleges with interests in music, engineering and computer science, before finding athletic training and graduating with a bachelor of science degree in physical education from Cal Poly in 1993.

He received his master of arts degree from San Diego State University in physical education in 1998, specializing in athletic training and biomechanics.

Gabrielson has been a Certified Athletic Trainer since 1993 and has worked at all levels of the profession, including high School, NAIA College Division, NCAA Division I, professional, and clinical settings.

Gabrielson married Laura Haney on July 12, 2008, and they reside in Arroyo Grande with one son, Eric (3). Paul is an avid cyclist and enjoys hiking, kayaking, and soaring of all forms.

Chris Ritter is in his seventh season as an athletic trainer at Cal Poly.

Prior to coming to Cal Poly, Ritter was an athletic trainer at UC Santa Barbara for nine years. A graduate of UC Santa Barbara, Ritter worked his way through the student training program under the direction of Harry Callihan and Leroy Heu.

After graduating from UC Santa Barbara in 1994, Ritter worked in a variety of settings that included clinical work, high school athletic training and as an assistant with the Anaheim Ducks professional hockey team.

Ritter works primarily with the women's volleyball and softball teams.

Ritter and his wife Stacey were married in July 2003.
