SAN LUIS OBISPO – After swatting three homers and pacing the Cal Poly softball team in runs (five), RBI (six), total bases (13) and slugging percentage (1.444) during the program’s May 14-15 regular season series finale at Pacific, Mustang freshman second baseman Shea Williams earned Big West Conference Co-Player of the Week honors on Monday afternoon.
Williams entered the series with just two extra-base hits during her initial 38 collegiate games, but opened a May 14 doubleheader against the Tigers with her first career homer – a solo shot during the top of the second inning. Williams then led off the top of the seventh with a second solo homer to help cement Cal Poly’s 12-3 victory.
Williams, who reached base safely during each series contest, returned during Cal Poly’s May 15 season finale to belt a three-run homer during the top of the second inning. The three-run cushion stood as the winning margin for Cal Poly, which capped its 16th Division I season with a 12-2 triumph.
Williams, who batted .444 during the series, also raised her season slugging percentage figure 169 points to a high of .338.
With Monday’s honor, Williams became the first Mustang to earn Big West Player of the Week praise since first baseman Krysten Cary on April 13, 2009. Williams is also the third Mustang this season to capture a Big West weekly award following the Pitcher of the Week honors won by junior lefthander Anna Cahn (Feb. 22, March 22, April 12) and freshman righthander Rebecca Patton (April 19, 26).
Williams shared Monday’s award with UC Santa Barbara's Jessica Beristanos.
Behind the series victory at Pacific, Cal Poly (23-24, 12-9) clinched a sixth-consecutive top-three showing in the Big West standings.
