SACRAMENTO – Sophomore lefthander Anna Cahn struck out six hitters against zero walks as the Cal Poly softball team completed play at the Sacramento State-hosted Capital Classic with a 4-1 victory against No. 10 California that not only cemented a Sunday doubleheader sweep, but furthered the program’s winning streak to 13-straight games. Earlier Sunday at Shea Stadium, a run-scoring hit from Cahn in the fifth inning accounted for the eventual winning margin as the Mustangs edged Colorado State, 2-1.

With the pair of victories, Cal Poly (19-6) ensured its lengthiest winning streak under fifth-year head coach Jenny Condon and the second-longest spurt since the 1997 Mustang squad won the opening 15 games of their season. The lone undefeated team at the Capital Classic and competition’s champions after defeating BYU on Saturday, 4-1, Cal Poly contests a 1 p.m. single game at No. 4 Stanford Monday, March 23.

Cal Poly opened the scoring against California (22-7) during the second inning. With senior second baseman Stephanie Tam at first following her own fielder’s choice, junior catcher Sara Kryza singled in front of California right fielder Elia Reid, who bobbled the bouncing ball. The resulting error allowed Tam to score from first base.

California’s response was swift as, during the top of the third, second baseman Shannon Thomas doubled up the middle to plate first baseman Valerie Arioto.

The Mustangs regained their lead in the fourth, as senior shortstop Melissa Pura led off the inning with a single before being sacrificed to second by junior first baseman Krysten Cary. The ensuing hitter, Cahn, doubled into left center field to score Pura for a 2-1 advantage. The Mustangs extended their lead two batters later, as a line drive by Kryza tipped off the glove of Bears third baseman Shannon Houston and scored freshman pinch runner Nicole Lund.

Cal Poly completed the scoring in the fifth, as a single by Pura plated freshman right fielder Nora Sobczak.

Cahn (12-3), who also tossed 74 percent of her 98 pitches for strikes, finished with two hits, along with Pura and Kryza.

Against Colorado State (14-17), Cal Poly reached the leadoff hitter during both the first and second innings before finally breaking through against Rams starting righthander Kelli Eubanks (5-6) in the third. Senior center fielder Jessica Rogers and Pura opened the inning with consecutive base hits before Cahn drew a full-count walk. The next Mustang, Tam, followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Rogers for a 1-0 lead.

The Mustangs doubled their lead in the fifth, as a one-out single from Cary was followed by a run-scoring single from Cahn.

Cal Poly starting lefthander Helen Peña (6-3, above) allowed just two Colorado State hits through the initial six innings before the Rams loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh. With Cahn on in relief, Colorado State third baseman Robyn Mask grounded a ball back to the circle. Cahn failed to field the ball cleanly and although the resulting error allowed pinch runner Amilia Stephens to score and halve Cal Poly’s lead, Rams shortstop Caitla Stem flew out to end the game.

Cal Poly received three hits from senior third baseman Cristen Lee and two from Pura.
