Pair of Mustang Wrestlers Earn All-American Honors
AKRON, Ohio -- Two Cal Poly wrestlers earned All-American honors at the Asics University National Freestyle Championships held April 8-11. Mustang sophomore Ryan DesRoches placed third at 79 kilograms (174 pounds) while Ryan Smith, also a sophomore, finished fifth at 96 kilograms (211.5 pounds). AKRON, Ohio -- Two Cal Poly wrestlers earned All-American honors at the Asics University National Freestyle Championships held April 8-11.
Mustang sophomore Ryan DesRoches placed third at 79 kilograms (174 pounds) while Ryan Smith, also a sophomore, finished fifth at 96 kilograms (211.5 pounds).
"This was a huge jump for both of them leading into next season," said Cal Poly assistant wrestling coach Mark Perry. "Both wrestling brackets were loaded with NCAA qualifiers and All-Americans."
DesRoches (pictured above) won his first two matches by technical fall and reached the semifinals with a pair of decisions before losing to Austin Meys 3-3, 3-1.
He won his consolation semifinal 3-1, 6-0, then pinned Chase Nelson, 0-6, 0:22, for third place. There were 70 wrestlers in his bracket and DesRoches finished 7-1.
Smith won his first match by fall, but fell into the consolation bracket with a 1-1, 2-2 loss in the second round.
He then won six consecutive matches before losing 5-0, 5-3, to Brodie Ambrose in the consolation semifinals. Smith won 3-0, 0-1, 7-0 over Neil Delaney in the match for fifth and sixth place. There were 57 wrestlers in his bracket and Smith posted an 8-2 record.
Also competing from Cal Poly were Travis Rasmussen, Jake Tanenbaum, Steven Vasquez and Kelan Bragg.
