Cal Poly Student-Athletes take part in several community service projects and activities throughout the year both as individuals in the community, as teams, and for various organizations and events in the greater San Luis Obispo area.  Mustang Student-Athletes are committed to giving back to the community.  By providing opportunities for student-athletes to serve, they make meaningful contributions to their communities.

CHAMPS/Life Skills Program 

The CHAMPS/ Life Skills Program is designed to help student-athletes realize higher academic achievement, increased likelihood of graduation and enter a chosen profession with a higher level of vision, knowledge, motivation, self-responsibility and greater overall success.

“The mission of the Life Skills Program is to provide a systematic personal development program designed to reach each student-athlete based on his or her individual needs. The focus of the program is on the individual as a whole person academically, athletically and emotionally and on the changing needs of that individual during college and in the years after graduation.”

By focusing on “real life” skills and personal development, the CHAMPS/ Life Skills Program not only assists the student-athletes with meeting daily challenges, but also enhances student-athlete’s growth in their college years and beyond.

The CHAMPS/ Life Skills Program serves as a means to prepare student-athletes for life after college by focusing on five areas:

• Commitment to Academic ExcellenceTo support the academic progress of the student-athlete toward intellectual development and graduation.

• Commitment to Athletic ExcellenceTo build philosophical foundations for the development of athletic programs that are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to the well-being of the student-athlete.

Cal Poly Athletics Adopts Families for the Holiday Season 

Block P, Cal Poly's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, will provide presents to 33 adopted children during the holiday season as part of the Angel Tree program.  

Each of Cal Poly's 20 Division I teams has adopted at least one child in need. The teams have participated in the Angel Tree program every year since 2004, having provided over 180 children with presents for the holidays in that span.  

Each child provided for is from San Luis Obispo County and is from families who face financial hardship and have applied for assistance through the Angel Tree program. 

The Angel Tree program provides underprivileged children and seniors with holiday gifts, proving during the holiday season that someone cares.

The program relies on the selfless giving and support of the community to bring joy and happiness to those less fortunate during the holiday season. No child chooses to live in poverty and no senior ever expects to rely on the goodwill of others. The Angel Tree program provides clothing, special-needs gifts and other wished-for items such as toys.

During a screening process to verify need, Angels (children ages 12 and under and seniors ages 62 and older) are qualified for the program.  Angels are assigned a tag listing their name, age, sex, clothing size and the item(s) they would like or need and members of the community reach out during the holidays to provide the gifts.

Cal Poly is proud to support the program and of the student-athletes from Block P for spearheading the effort on behalf of the department.

Cal Poly has over 500 athletes competing in 20 sports.

 

Basketball Reaches out for Red Ribbon Week

Cal Poly Basketball players David Hansen, Brittany Woodard, and Ariel Gregersen participated in Laguna Middle School's Kick-Off Assembly for Red Ribbon Week in partnership with Friday Night Live. The athletes spoke to both 7th and 8th grade students about how their smart and healthy choices in regards to drugs and alcohol helped them become the student-athlete they are today. 

 
Adopt A School Program

The Cal Poly Adopt-A-School Program, in its fifth year, is designed to offer students in San Luis Obispo County and northern Santa Barbara County the opportunity to develop a relationship with student-athlete role models from Cal Poly.
