Sohrab Movahedi, 184 Pounds, 5-8, Junior, Northridge, Calif./Granada Hills Charter
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Sohrab Movahedi, who earned his sixth straight win and sparked the Cal Poly wrestling team to a come-from-behind victory over Northern Colorado on Sunday, is the Coca-Cola Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
Cal Poly’s comeback from 14-0 and 18-6 deficits by winning six of the last seven bouts resulted in a 21-18 triumph over the Bears in a non-conference dual meet in Mott Athletics Center.
It was the Mustangs’ second straight come-from-behind 21-18 triumph. Last week, Cal Poly rode a 6-0 decision from Colt Shorts to victory over CSU Bakersfield at Righetti High School.
After winning their final home dual meet of the season, the Mustangs improved to 6-8 for the year, doubling last year’s win total. Cal Poly last won six duals in a season during the 2011-12 campaign.
Trailing 3-2 in the final period, Movahedi scored a takedown with seven seconds remaining for a 4-3 decision over No. 20-ranked Dylan Gabel at 184 pounds. The junior improved his season record to 13-5.
Cal Poly trailed 18-12 after Movahedi’s win and the Mustangs won the last two bouts to claim the dual meet win.
Late Monday afternoon, the Pac-12 Conference released its third set of individual rankings and Movahedi is ranked No. 1 at 184 pounds.
The Mustangs wrap up the dual meet portion of their 2016-17 schedule this weekend with Pac-12 Conference matches at Oregon State on Friday and at Boise State on Sunday.
Stanford will host the Pac-12 Championship on Feb. 26, with the NCAA Division I National Championship scheduled for March 16-18 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
