SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly sophomore outfielder
David Armendariz, who went 8-for-13
with three doubles, a home run, five runs scored and eight RBI last
week against UC Riverside, has been named Coca-Cola/Cal Poly
Student-Athlete of the Week.
The Notre Dame High School (Sherman Oaks) graduate, who went
6-for-10 a week earlier, posted even more impressive numbers last
week in Cal Poly’s season-ending sweep of the
Highlanders.
Armendariz, also named Big West Conference Field Player of the
Week for the second week in a row, collected his three doubles in
Saturday’s 15-9 win and produced the game-winning RBI and run
on Sunday with a leadoff home run in the second inning.
In his last seven games of the 2012 season, Armendariz was
14-for-23 with eight runs scored and 15 RBI, raising his batting
average 38 points to .312.
Two weeks ago, Armendariz drove in seven runs and stole four bases
in four baseball games, knocking in two game-winning runs during
Cal Poly’s only 4-0 week of the season -- one against CSU
Bakersfield and three more against UC Santa Barbara. In addition to
his six hits in the week, Armendariz also walked three times, laid
down two sacrifice bunts and hit a sacrifice fly.
For the season, Armendariz hit .312 with 12 doubles, two triples,
four home runs and 36 RBI. He led the Mustangs with 13 stolen bases
in 18 attempts.
Cal Poly finished the 2012 season 36-20 overall and 16-8 for
second place in the Big West.
